Zach Weller of Colorado State University, presenting on A National Estimate of Methane Leakage from Pipeline Mains in Natural Gas Local Distribution Systems.

Abstract

While many methane emissions studies have characterized leakage from natural gas production, there are relatively fewer studies that quantify methane emissions within local distribution systems. We use data from high-sensitivity CH4 analyzers placed on Google Street View cars develop estimates of the number of leaks and total emissions in local distribution systems. Our findings reveal leakage estimates that are an estimated 5x greater than the current EPA inventory.
