Huilin Chen: Methane Emissions from Rice Paddies

Abstract:

Rice paddies are a significant contributor to global CH4 emissions, accounting for approximately 8% of anthropogenic emissions. The stable isotope of methane, particularly δ13C-CH4, has been widely used to constrain CH4 emissions. However, observations of δ13C-CH4 in rice paddies are sparse, limiting the capability of accurately determining CH4 emissions in rice paddies. Here, we performed in-situ continuous observations of CH4 and δ13C-CH4 at three different heights in rice paddy throughout a growing season, and investigated the emission source signature of δ13Csource, and its partitioning into plant-mediated pathway (δ13CP) and non-plant-mediated pathway (δ13CNP). We found a distinct temporal variation of δ13Csource in rice paddies, which was dominated by the δ13CP component. Furthermore, we show that δ13Csource was highly correlated with GPP, Respiration, and LAI, with the highest correlation observed with GPP. Our results provide a potential new way of improving our understanding of δ13Csource from rice paddies, which will be important to accurately constrain CH4 fluxes on regional to global scales.

Bio:

 Dr. Huilin Chen is a professor at the school of atmospheric sciences of Nanjing University in China. He received his BS degree from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC), his MS degree from Tsinghua University, and his PhD from Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry. Before joining Nanjing University, he was a tenured associate professor at the University of Groningen. He has coordinated and participated in a number of methane-related projects, including the National Key R&D Project of China "Evaluation of Methane Emissions estimates using Satellite and surface monitoring - methods and standards research (EMES)", EU funded MEMO2, RINGO, Netherlands Science Foundation sponsored AirCore, ESA funded FRM4GHG. He published more than 80 papers, and served as chair of the Monitoring Station Assembly Atmosphere of EU infrastructure ICOS.
