Fancy Cheptonui: Performance of emerging and existing natural gas continuous monitoring solutions under a single-blind controlled testing protocol

Abstract
Although CM solutions have high uncertainties in terms of quantification, they may facilitate quick emission detection and repair. We present the results of the third implementation of the Advancing Development of Emission Detection (ADED) controlled testing protocol for Continuous Monitoring (CM) solutions. Ten point sensor networks and 3 scanning/imaging solutions were tested with controlled release rates ranging from 0.08 to 6.75 kg CH4 hr-1 for 18 minutes to 8 hours. Based on the results, CM solutions improve performance by assessing various metrics, including the 90% detection limit, localization, and quantification accuracies. The improvement in these metrics shows that the solutions balance method sensitivity and low FP and FN rates. Additionally, we show the importance of continuously and rigorously testing CM solutions.
Bio
I am a Ph.D. student in the Department of Systems Engineering at Colorado State University and a Research Assistant at the Methane Emissions Technology Evaluation Center (METEC). I completed my master’s in systems engineering at CSU and my BSc in Petroleum Engineering at Kenyatta University in Kenya. During my master's, my research focused on quantifying below-ground natural gas pipeline leaks.
